Gym challenge ideas: using crews and a monthly challenge to keep members training
Monthly gym challenge ideas that run themselves: how Valleur crews work, launching them at your gym, what to post each month and what to measure.
Most gym challenges start strong and fade by week three. Someone draws up a whiteboard, staff tally sessions by hand, a few regulars get competitive, and everyone else forgets it exists. Then the person running it goes on leave.
Valleur's crews and monthly challenge are built so the tracking and reminders happen in the app. That leaves your team with the fun part: promoting it and celebrating the winners. This is a practical playbook for running it at your gym.
How crews and the monthly challenge work
Members join your gym in the Valleur app and team up with friends in a crew of 2 to 10 people. Crews are ranked on average training days per member for the month, on a board for your gym and on a board for Australia or their state.
Because the ranking is an average, a small crew that turns up consistently can beat a big one, and every member's sessions count. With three days left in the month, everyone at your gym gets a reminder showing where their crew sits. On the 1st, each ranked crew hears how they finished.
Launching crews at your gym
The first week sets the tone. Put your gym's invite code where people already look: the front desk, your welcome email, your Instagram bio, a sign near the water fountain.
Explain it in one sentence: "Grab two to nine mates, start a crew in Valleur, and see if you can out-train every other crew in the gym this month." Anything longer and people stop reading.
Start a staff crew. Your trainers and front-desk team forming a crew gives members a target to beat, and it's an easy conversation starter on the floor.
What to do each month
Mid-month, post the top three crews at your gym, if they're happy to be named. A little public rivalry keeps the middle of the month from going flat.
In the final three days, the app sends members the reminder. Back it up with a story or a sign: "Three days left. Where's your crew?"
On the 1st, congratulate the winning crew. Prizes don't need to be big. A shout-out, a free coffee, a gym t-shirt or first pick of class bookings will do.
Gym challenge ideas to keep it fresh
Theme the months. "New year, new crew" in January, or a winter consistency challenge when attendance usually drops in June and July.
Encourage mixed-experience crews. Because rankings are an average of training days, a newer member who turns up three times a week helps their crew as much as a veteran does. Ask regulars to bring in someone new.
Celebrate national results. If one of your crews places on the Australia or state board, that's great content for your socials and a bit of local pride for the gym.
How to tell if it's working
Official gyms can see member counts per site, how many members show their Strength Score, and how many website visits Valleur sent you in the last 30 days. Track those month to month, alongside your own attendance figures from your check-in system, and compare them with the months before you launched.
If you're not official yet, see how to make your gym official on Valleur. It takes a few minutes and gives you those numbers.
Fair play and privacy
Members can only switch crews once a week, so nobody hops between crews to game the board. Crew invites only go between friends, and people can accept or decline. The boards show training days and opt-in Strength Scores only. Workouts, body weight and other private data never appear. For the full picture of what members see, read your gym on Valleur.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good monthly challenge for gym members?
One that rewards turning up rather than raw strength, so beginners can compete with regulars. A team challenge ranked on average training days per member works well, because it builds social ties as well as consistency.
How do you run a gym challenge without extra staff time?
Use a system that tracks sessions and sends reminders automatically. Valleur's crews and monthly challenge rank teams and remind members in the app, so staff only need to promote it and celebrate the winners.
Do gym challenges need prizes?
Not necessarily. Recognition does a lot of the work. A shout-out on your socials, a free coffee or a gym shirt is usually plenty.
